Open to all girls in grades 6-12. GWC is strict about the age requirements for the Club.
All girls who are registered for the club are expected to attend 80% of the meetings.
You do not have to be a Newton resident to join.
Women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but hold just 25% of the jobs in technical or computing fields. In middle school, 74% of girls express interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), but when choosing a college major, just 0.4% of high school girls select computer science. While 57% of bachelor's degrees are earned by women, just 12% of computer science degrees are awarded to women. Women today represent 18% of all computer science graduates. In 1984, they represented 37%.
The Newton Free Library hosts two clubs that meet for two hours every week.
Our meetings will begin sometime in early October. There are two separate clubs. Session A meets on Tuesdays 6:30-8:30 PM and Session B meets on Fridays 4-6 PM. (Sign ups are for one session only)
The registration period has ended.
If you are interested in adding your name to our wait-list, please fill out this form.
This year's GWC Clubs are currently FULL. Please fill out this form if you would like to be added to the wait-list. We will maintain a wait-list, so we may follow up with you later in the fall if a slot opens up.
GWC is led by volunteer instructors who work in the computer science field.
The Club began several years ago when a Newton high school student approached the Library about hosting a Club after she attended the GWC Summer Immersion program, a 7-week computer science course for rising juniors and seniors.
Are you passionate about computer science, friendly, welcoming and love working with teens? Can you commit to 2 hours a week from the Fall-Spring for a total of 40 curriculum hours? Great! Please visit the Girls Who Code teach page to learn more.
