Newton Free Library Service Updates

As Coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns continue to evolve, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has extended his March 23rd “Stay at Home” Executive Order requiring all non-essential businesses to close. At this time, the Executive Order has extended until May 4, 2020.  Newton Free Library is currently closed to the public.

While the building is closed for visitors, Newton Free Library is working extra hard to make many of our services available for you to enjoy from the comfort and safety of your own home!

  • Have a reference question or need assistance with your library account? We are still available by phone (617-796-1360) and email (newtonpublicservices@minlib.net) to help answer your questions. Just send us an email or leave us a message!

  • Please keep your borrowed items at home. All due dates have been extended to June 30th. This is to give you plenty of flexibility to decide when you are ready and able venture back to the library.

  • Fines are waived during this closure. If your account registers fines during this time we will waive them for you when the library re-opens.

Need suggestions on what to read next?

  • Our librarians are on-call to create personalized book suggestion lists for all ages! Just complete this quick survey
  • Follow us on Instagram and watch our Stories to request ideas of what to read next.
  • Watch our homepage for lists of books recommended by staff which focus on items available via the library’s digital services mentioned below. Coming soon!

Need ideas to keep you entertained, active and informed?

We’ve developed a great guide to help keep all the members of your household engaged and occupied. It features activities for kids and families, virtual tours of museums and national parks, streaming concerts, stress relief activities and more! We’re updating it daily so check back frequently.

For Kids & Families

  • Join us for online storytimes with stories, songs and rhymes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 am, starting on April 2 on Zoom. Zoom links will be available for each storytime, check our events calendar.
  • Call our Dial-a-Story hotline at 617-796-1415 to listen to a new story each day read by one of our Children’s Librarians.
Does your child miss seeing their librarians? We miss you too! We want to share a video or audio hello to them! Email your request to Librarian Jean at newtonkids@newtonfreelibrary.net. Once we have the parent's email address, our librarian will sing the child’s favorite song, do a finger rhyme or send a happy eGreeting directly to your inbox! (This service has been so popular - please be patient with us as it may take us a few days to respond with your special greeting!)

Stay tuned for even more great remote offerings from your Library!
