Library Solar Canopy Parking Lot Project

City of Newton's Library Solar Canopy Parking Lot Project

 Canopy construction is nearly completed, our parking lot is OPEN with greater parking availability! 

The City of Newton has begun construction on the Library parking lot to increase capacity and accessibility, improve drainage, and add solar canopies as part of the City’s Climate Action Plan. The project will:

  • Generate solar energy to provide 40% of the Library’s electricity use

  • Add 21 parking spaces

  • Make sidewalks wider and add a new crosswalk to improve pedestrian safety

  • Improve accessible parking spots with closer proximity to the Library

  • Improve storm water infrastructure

  • Add 8 electric vehicle charging spots

  • Improve wayfinding signage

To create alternative parking during construction, the City temporarily changed a portion of Homer Street to a one-way roadway (from Walnut Street to Commonwealth Avenue) and added more on-street parking with angled spaces.

This is a two phase project. The first phase includes building the solar canopies in Summer 2021. The second phase will be to improve the storm water infrastructure and repave the parking lot, which will likely happen in Spring 2022.
